A weight distribution system does not increase a hitch's tongue weight capacity. Rather, it takes weight off of the tongue, helping loads stay stable and level.
In other words, if you use a trailer without a weight distribution system with a tongue weight that is just under the hitch's gross tongue weight capacity, it can cause the rear of your vehicle to sag. You will need to check with the vehicle manufacturer or your specific vehicles owners manual to get the GCVWR (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating) for your 2003 Ford Explorer V6. On your 2008 Chevy Silverado 1500 the tongue weight capacity with or without weight distribution applies to the trailer hitch on the vehicle and not on the trailer. This is a really good question. So we've asked our weight distribution manufacturers this and they have told us that the weight of the WD system like the # EQ37060ET does not count against the tongue weight of the hitch or vehicle because it essentially is becoming part of the hitch of the vehicle. view full answer...
I spoke with my contact at Curt, the manufacturer, about Curt Hitch, # C13073. He stated that the hitch is not rated for weight distribution because it is a lighter hitch that is wider than many other hitches. Because of this if you added a weight distribution system it would add more torque and possibly flex or bend the hitch. This flexing or bending would compromise the hitch and make it unsafe for towing. Because of that they do not recommend adding weight distribution with this hitch.

If you are using an aftermarket trailer hitch on your 2012 Ford F-250 with the 6.2L V8 engine then some will have a higher tongue weight and gross trailer weight rating if used with a weight distribution system like the TorkLift SuperHitch Magnum Trailer Hitch Receiver part # TLF1008-30.
